Boneyard is a ghost town located in Alcorn County, Mississippi, United States. A ghost town is a place that used to be a lively community but is now empty. Boneyard was about 8.9 miles (14.3 km) west of the city of Corinth.

The Story of Boneyard

Boneyard was started by a man named William Powell in the 1830s. It was built along an important route for stagecoaches. These were horse-drawn carriages that carried people and mail between towns. This route connected Jacinto, Mississippi and La Grange, Tennessee.

Why the Name "Boneyard"?

People gave the settlement the funny name "Boneyard." This was because William Powell, who founded the town, was a very thin man. So, the name was a playful joke about him.

What Was Boneyard Like?

Even though it was small, Boneyard had many useful businesses. It had a shop where people made cabinets and a blacksmith who worked with metal. There were also three general stores where people could buy goods.

The town also had a place to tan animal hides for leather. There was a saddler's shop that made saddles for horses. Boneyard even had its own school, called the Boneyard School. A special machine was used to prepare wool for people living nearby. At its busiest, about 100 people lived in Boneyard.

How Boneyard Disappeared

During the American Civil War, Boneyard faced a sad end. The town was destroyed by the Union Army. After the war, Boneyard was never rebuilt. Today, it remains a ghost town, a reminder of a community that once was.
