Jacinto is a small community in Alcorn County, Mississippi, in the United States. It was founded a long time ago, in 1836. The town got its name from an important battle called the Battle of San Jacinto, which happened during the Texas Revolution.

Jacinto is known as a Census-designated place. This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for gathering population information, even if it's not officially a city or town.

A Glimpse into History

Jacinto was once a very important town. It was located right in the middle of the original Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Just ten years after it was founded, Jacinto grew into a busy place. It had many stores, hotels, schools, churches, and even taverns. It was the main center for government and business in the county.

The Old Courthouse

A special building in Jacinto is its courthouse, built in 1854. This building was the county courthouse for the original Tishomingo County. It was designed in the federal style, which is a classic American architectural look.

Today, the courthouse has been fixed up and looks great. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site that is protected. Visitors can come and explore this historic building.

A Town Changes

During the American Civil War, a small fight happened near Jacinto on September 7, 1863. This was between soldiers from the Confederate and Union armies.

In 1869, Tishomingo County was divided into three smaller counties. These new counties were Tishomingo, Alcorn, and Prentiss. Because of this change, Jacinto was no longer the county seat.

New county seats were chosen: Corinth for Alcorn County, Iuka for the smaller Tishomingo County, and Booneville for Prentiss County. When the county government moved away from Jacinto in 1870, the town became less important. Many people and businesses started to leave.

A post office served Jacinto from 1840 until 1909. Jacinto also appears on the Glens U.S. Geological Survey Map.
