Alcorn County is a county located in the northeastern part of Mississippi, a state in the United States. A county is like a smaller region within a state, often with its own local government. In 2020, about 34,740 people lived here. The main town and county seat (where the county government is) is Corinth. The county is named after James L. Alcorn, who was a governor of Mississippi.
History
How Alcorn County Was Formed
Alcorn County was created on April 15, 1870. It was made from parts of two other counties: Tippah and Tishomingo counties.
Role in the Civil War
This area was important during the American Civil War. It was the location of the Siege of Corinth, which was an early and significant battle in the war. A siege is when an army surrounds a place to try and capture it.
Geography
Size and Location
Alcorn County covers about 401 square miles. Most of this area, around 400 square miles, is land. Only a small part, about 1.3 square miles, is water. It is actually the smallest county in Mississippi by land area.
Rivers and Waterways
Two rivers, the Tuscumbia and the Hatchie, flow through the county. Rivers are important for nature and sometimes for transportation.
