History of Farmington
Before 1855, Farmington was a busy and growing place. However, two important railroads, the Mobile and Ohio and the Memphis and Charleston, were built about 4 miles (6.4 km) away from the town. This caused Farmington to start shrinking.
Even as the American Civil War began, Farmington still had many people, a post office, and several houses. But when the Union Army marched towards Corinth, Farmington was completely destroyed. Soldiers tore down houses to use the wood for building defenses or for flooring inside their tents.
