Bonney is a small village located in Brazoria County, Texas, in the United States. In 2020, only 180 people lived there, making it the smallest village in Texas. Even though it's tiny, Bonney is still much larger than the smallest city and town in Texas.
History of Bonney
Bonney was started in 1873. It began as a stop along the International–Great Northern Railroad line. The village was named after a train conductor who worked on a different railway.
In 1889, Bonney got its own post office. A year later, a new general store opened. Over the next six years, the village grew more. It added a school, three more businesses, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from seeds), and a telegraph office. By 1895, about 75 people lived in Bonney. In 1906, the school had one teacher and 20 students.
The post office in Bonney closed in 1920. By 1955, the village had only one business and 25 people living there. The population slowly grew again. In 1988, there were 99 residents. By 1990, the census counted 339 people, and in 2000, the number went up to 384. However, by 2020, the population had decreased to 180.
A famous person named Albert Sidney Johnston lived near Bonney for a time. He was a graduate of the West Point and a general in the Texas army in the 1830s. He also served as the Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. Later, he became a general in the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.
Where is Bonney Located?
Bonney is in the northern part of Brazoria County. It is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Angleton, which is the county seat. It is also about 13 miles (21 kilometers) south of Arcola.
A major highway, Texas State Highway 288, is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) east of the village. This highway can take you about 33 miles (53 kilometers) north to downtown Houston.
The total area of Bonney is about 1.96 square miles (5.08 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.
