Boris Peter Bransby Williams (born 24 April 1957) is an English musician. He is best known as the drummer for the famous band The Cure. He played with them from 1984 to 1994. Later, he started his own band called Babacar in the late 1990s.

Who is Boris Williams?

Boris Williams was born in Versailles, France. His family moved to Farnham, England when he was a child. He started playing drums in local bands. One of his bandmates was Roger O'Donnell, who later also joined The Cure. Boris first focused on jazz fusion, a type of jazz music. Then, he started playing alternative rock. He worked as a musician for other bands like Thompson Twins and Kim Wilde. This means he played drums for them in the studio or on tour.

Joining The Cure

In 1984, the band The Cure needed a new drummer. Their old drummer, Andy Anderson, had left the band. Boris Williams was suggested for the job by Phil Thornalley. Phil was The Cure's bass player and producer at the time. He had worked with Boris before.

Boris learned all of The Cure's songs in just three days! His first show with the band was in November 1984. After that, he was asked to join the band permanently. His first album as a full member was The Head on the Door in 1985.

His Time with The Cure

Boris Williams was part of The Cure during their most successful years. Many fans think he was the best drummer the band ever had. He was known for trying new things with his drums. He used electronic drums and special sound loops. He helped a lot with the band's remix album Mixed Up in 1990.

Critics praised his drumming style. They said he was very creative and good at keeping time. Billboard magazine even said his drumming could "steal the show" from his bandmates.

After The Cure

Boris Williams also played drums on albums for Shelleyan Orphan. His longtime partner, Caroline Crawley, was in that band. He left The Cure in 1994 for personal reasons.

Later, he formed the band Babacar with Caroline Crawley. Other musicians who worked with The Cure also joined. Their self-titled album Babacar came out in 1998.

In 2001, Boris helped record new acoustic versions of The Cure's songs. These were for their Greatest Hits album. He didn't officially rejoin the band, though. In 2019, Boris Williams was honored. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cure.
