Early Life and Musical Start
Boris Williams was born in 1951 in Versailles, France. His parents were English. When he was a child, his family moved to Farnham, England.
He started playing drums in local bands. He even played with Roger O'Donnell, who would later join The Cure. At first, Boris focused on jazz fusion music. Later, he started playing alternative rock. He also worked as a session musician for other bands. This means he played drums for recordings or tours without being a permanent band member. He played for groups like Thompson Twins and Kim Wilde.
Joining The Cure
In 1984, the band The Cure needed a new drummer. Their previous drummer had left during an American tour. Phil Thornalley, who was The Cure's bassist and producer at the time, suggested Boris Williams. Phil had worked with Boris before.
Boris learned all of The Cure's songs in just three days! His first show with the band was in November 1984. After that, he was asked to join the band permanently. His first album as a full-time member was The Head on the Door in 1985.
His Unique Drumming Style
Boris Williams was part of The Cure during their most successful years. Many fans consider him the best drummer the band ever had. He was known for trying new things with electronic drums and loops. He helped a lot with the band's remix album, Mixed Up, in 1990.
Critics praised his drumming style. They said he was willing to create whole beats using different parts of his drum kit. Billboard magazine noted his drumming was subtle but powerful. They said he often "stole the show" from his bandmates. He was also known for his excellent technical skills and keeping perfect time.
Life After The Cure
Boris Williams also played drums on albums for Shelleyan Orphan. His longtime partner, Caroline Crawley, was in that band. He left The Cure in 1994 for personal reasons.
Later in the 1990s, he formed the band Babacar with Caroline Crawley. Other musicians who had worked with The Cure also joined. Porl Thompson, a former bandmate from The Cure, sometimes played with Babacar. Babacar released their self-titled album in 1998.
In 2001, Boris helped record new acoustic versions of The Cure's songs. These were for their Greatest Hits album. He did not officially rejoin the band, though. In 2019, Boris Williams was honored. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cure.
