Borka Pavićević (born June 5, 1947 – died June 30, 2019) was a very important person from Serbia. She was a dramaturge, which means she worked with plays and theatre. She was also a writer for newspapers and a cultural activist, someone who uses art and culture to make positive changes. People also called her a pacifist, meaning she believed in peace and avoiding war.

Borka Pavićević started the Centre for Cultural Decontamination in 1994. This center worked to help people deal with difficult past events through art and discussion. She also helped create the Belgrade Circle, a group of thinkers who discussed important ideas.

Her Early Life and Education

Borka Pavićević was born in a city called Kotor. This city is in a country now known as Montenegro. In 1971, she finished her studies at the University of Arts in Belgrade in Belgrade, Serbia. She studied theatre, film, radio, and television.

A Career in Theatre

Borka Pavićević spent many years working in theatre. For ten years, she was a dramaturge at a famous theatre called Atelje 212. A dramaturge helps choose plays and works with writers and directors.

In 1981, she started her own theatre called "New Sensibility" in a brewery in Belgrade. From 1984 to 1991, she was part of an art group called "KPGT." She also worked as a playwright and artistic director at the Belgrade Drama Theatre. She left this role in 1993 because of her strong beliefs and ideas.

Borka also helped choose plays for the Belgrade International Theatre Festival for 20 years.

Working for Peace and Culture

Borka Pavićević was a strong voice for peace and understanding. She started the Centre for Cultural Decontamination in 1994. This center aimed to help people understand and move past difficult times. It has held over 5,000 events, including art shows, protests, and talks.

She was also a regular writer for the newspaper "Danas." In 2012, she signed a special paper for the Civil Resistance Movement. She also helped write a book called Belgrade, my Belgrade. In 2017, she signed another important paper. This paper was about a common language for people from different countries in the region.

Awards and Recognition

Borka Pavićević received many awards for her important work:

  • The Otto Rene Castillo Award for Political Theater (2000)
  • The Hiroshima Foundation Prize for Peace and Culture (2004)
  • The Osvajanje slobode (“Winning Freedom”) prize (2005)
  • Routes Award by the European Cultural Foundation (2009/2010)
  • The Legion of Honour from the Government of France (2001)

Her Family and Legacy

Borka Pavićević was married to Nikola Barović, who was a lawyer working for human rights. She passed away on June 30, 2019, in Belgrade, when she was 72 years old. Her work continues to inspire people to use culture and art for peace and understanding.
