Rodney "Boss" Bailey (born October 14, 1979) is a former American football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). A linebacker is a defensive player who lines up behind the defensive line. He was chosen by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2003 NFL draft. This is when NFL teams pick new players from college. He played college football at the University of Georgia. Boss Bailey is also the brother of Champ Bailey, who is a famous NFL cornerback and is in the Hall of Fame.

Early Life and High School Years

Rodney "Boss" Bailey was born in Folkston, Georgia. He grew up there and went to Charlton County High School. During his time in high school, he was recognized as an "All-America" player by USA Today. This means he was one of the best high school players in the country.

College Football Career

After high school, Bailey played college football for the University of Georgia. He was a key player for three years. In his final year, 2002, he was named a first-team All-SEC player. This means he was one of the best players in the Southeastern Conference. He was also a semifinalist for the Butkus and Lombardi Awards, which are given to top college football players.

Playing in the NFL

Boss Bailey played in 58 games during his professional career. He started 51 of those games. He made 265 tackles, which means he stopped the player with the ball. He also had seven sacks, which is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback. He also made two interceptions, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.

Playing for the Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions picked Boss Bailey in the 2003 NFL Draft. In his first year, 2003, he was named an "All-Rookie" player by ESPN.com and Football Digest. He had a great first season, making 88 tackles. He started all 16 games that year.
