The Boston Building is a really old and important building in Denver, Colorado. It was built way back in 1890! It was designed by a famous team of architects called Andrews, Jacques and Rantoul. They also designed another big building nearby, the Equitable Building. When it was first built, people said it was Denver's first "super modern" office building!
This building is 9 stories tall, which is about 35 meters high. You can find it at 828 17th Street in Denver's historic area. In 1978, the Boston Building became a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very special building that is protected because of its history. It's also a Denver historic landmark. In 1998, the building was updated and joined with the Kistler Building. Now, it has cool one and two-bedroom apartments inside and is also known as Bank Lofts.
Living in the Boston Lofts
Today, the Boston Building is right in the middle of downtown Denver. It's close to popular spots like LoDo and the 16th Street Mall. Many other National Historic Landmark buildings are nearby, like the US National/Guaranty Bank Building. This building has 158 apartments, called lofts. They still have some of the original cool features, like high ceilings and exposed brick walls. You might even see old pressed-tin ceilings and pretty stained glass windows on the second floor!
The outside of the building looks like a mix of two old styles: Renaissance Revival and Richardsonian Romanesque. It's covered in red sandstone from Manitou. The original building had strong vaults (like big safes) in its corners. These have been turned into small entryways, called vestibules, for the corner apartments. Some apartments even have the heavy old vault doors! A company called Aimco bought the property in 2000.
Helping the Environment
Before 2008, the Boston Lofts used steam from Denver's main plant for heating and hot water. But in 2008, they changed to a new system. They now use very efficient boilers that run on clean natural gas. This new system also has a special computer control that helps save energy.
This change has been great for the environment! It uses less energy for heating than before. It also stops about 300,000 gallons of dirty water from being wasted each year. This makes the Boston Building a more eco-friendly place to live.
What's Inside?
Besides the apartments, the Boston Building also has shops and businesses on the ground floor. There are about 9,600 square feet (that's about 892 square meters) of retail space. You can find places like Cobbler's Corner, Gourmet Deli, Tousled Hair, D'Vine Wine, and FASTSIGNS there.
