Boswell is a small town located in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, about 579 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history tied to the Choctaw Nation.

History of Boswell

The area around Boswell was once a very important settlement for the Choctaw Nation. In the 1840s, a Presbyterian missionary station was set up at a place called Mayhew. This was about three miles north of where Boswell is today.

Mayhew quickly became a center for government and community life. It was the main place for administration and laws in the Pushmataha District. This district was one of three big areas that made up the Choctaw Nation.

Mayhew was part of Blue County, which was one of the counties in the Pushmataha District. Later, in 1886, parts of Blue County and other nearby areas were combined to create Jackson County. The government center for this new county was at Pigeon Roost, south of Boswell.

A United States Post Office was opened in Mayhew in 1845. It stayed there until 1902. Then, it moved about two miles south to a new town that was growing up along a new railroad line. This new town was named Boswell.

Boswell was named after S.C. Boswell, who was a local merchant, or someone who owned a store.
