Welcome to Bottineau!

Bottineau is a cool neighborhood in Minneapolis. It's known for its history and its lively arts scene. About 1,640 people call Bottineau home.

Where is Bottineau Located?

Bottineau is found along the Mississippi River to the west. Its northern border is Lowry Avenue NE. To the east, you'll find University Avenue NE. The southern edge is marked by 16th and 17th Avenues NE.

A Look Back: Bottineau's History

The neighborhood is named after Pierre Bottineau. He was a Minnesota frontiersman who bought land here in 1845.

Because it was right by the Mississippi River, Bottineau was a great spot for factories. There were grain mills, lumber mills, and even breweries. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, more homes were built. This was helped by the city's streetcar system, which expanded up 2nd Street NE.

During the 1950s and 1960s, the neighborhood faced some changes. Many small businesses closed. Some single-family homes were also changed into apartments for rent.

But things started to look up in the 1980s! Artists began moving to Bottineau. They turned old factory buildings into cool art studios. Today, Bottineau has a mix of homes, art studios, offices, and small shops. It's a big part of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

Fun Places and Schools

Bottineau has three city parks where you can play:

  • Bottineau Park
  • Edgewater Park
  • Gluek Park

There are also two charter schools in the neighborhood:

  • New Visions School (for grades K-8)
  • Menlo Park Academy (for grades 10-12)

You'll find many businesses along University Avenue and Lowry Avenue. The California Building is a famous landmark here. It was one of the first buildings to become artist studios, and it still is today!
