Boulder Junction is a small town in Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States. It is known for its beautiful nature and many outdoor activities. In 2018, about 956 people lived there.

History of Boulder Junction

In 1903, the Milwaukee Railroad built train tracks to this area. The railroad helped the growing logging industry. It also brought people who loved to fish and hunt in the outdoors.

Electricity came to Boulder Junction in 1925. The town officially became "Boulder Junction" in 1927. Phone service started in 1930. In the 1930s, many new trees were planted. This helped replace the trees that had been cut down during the logging boom.

Where is Boulder Junction?

Boulder Junction is in the middle of Vilas County. It is located near the Trout and Manitowish Rivers. These rivers eventually flow into the Flambeau River.

Much of the town is covered by the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. This large forest is a great place for nature lovers. The town covers about 100 square miles (260 square kilometers). About 18.5 square miles (47.8 square kilometers) of this area is water, mostly lakes. The rest is land covered by forests.

In 2000, there were 958 people living in Boulder Junction. Most people were White (98.23%). A small number were Native American or Asian. The average age of people in the town was 50 years old. About 17.4% of the people were under 18 years old. Many people living in Boulder Junction were 65 years or older (25.7%).

What is the Economy Like?

Boulder Junction's economy mostly depends on tourism. Many visitors come to enjoy the outdoors. The town is famous for fishing. It even has a special name: the "Musky Capital of the World." This is because more muskies (a type of large fish) are caught here than in any other similar-sized area.

Roads and Highways

USH 51 is a main road that goes through the southwestern part of Boulder Junction. It connects the town to other nearby places like Manitowish Waters and Minocqua. Other important roads are Vilas County Highways CTH M, CTH K, and CTH H. CTH M is the main road to get into the community of Boulder Junction. CTH K connects the town to schools and other towns.

Airport

Boulder Junction has its own airport called Boulder Junction Airport (FAA identifier KBDJ). It is about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) north of the town. This airport has two grass runways for smaller private planes.

Fun Things to Do

Boulder Junction offers many fun activities all year round.

  • Winter activities: You can go hunting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
  • Summer activities: Popular things to do include golf, camping, paddling on the lakes, fishing, and biking. There's a 52-mile paved bike trail called the Heart of Vilas bike trail.
  • Year-round activities: You can also enjoy horseback riding, bird watching, and hiking.

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is a huge area near Boulder Junction. It has 25,000 acres of forest and many lakes. There are 930 lakes and 250 miles of rivers and streams! This is why Boulder Junction is known as the "Musky Capital of the World."

Boulder Junction is also home to Camp Manito-wish YMCA. This camp started in 1919. It offers summer camp programs, wilderness trips, and leadership training for teens and families.

White Deer

Boulder Junction is special because it claims to have the largest group of white (albino) deer in Wisconsin. These unique deer are a big attraction. The town even uses pictures of white deer in its advertisements. Some tourists visit Boulder Junction just to see these beautiful animals.
