The Boulder River is a beautiful river in south-central Montana, United States. It flows for about 60 miles (96 km) and eventually joins the famous Yellowstone River. There is another river in Montana also called the Boulder River, so sometimes people call this one the "East Boulder River" to avoid confusion.
The river starts high up in the Absaroka Range mountains, within the Gallatin National Forest. It flows north through amazing mountain canyons. You can even see a waterfall under a natural rock bridge! The river then turns northwest, passing by a town called McLeod, before it meets the Yellowstone River near Big Timber. The stunning scenery of the Boulder River valley has been featured in two movies: A River Runs Through It and The Horse Whisperer.
River Flow and Water Levels
The amount of water flowing in the Boulder River changes throughout the year. Scientists measure this flow at different points along the river. This helps them understand how much water is in the river.
- Near McLeod, the East Boulder River usually flows at about 80 cubic feet per second.
- Also near McLeod, the West Boulder River typically flows at about 189 cubic feet per second.
- Closer to where it joins the Yellowstone River, near Big Timber, the Boulder River's flow averages around 563 cubic feet per second.
