History of Bowerston
Early Settlement and Mills
Bowerston was first settled in the early 1800s. Two brothers, Barnhard and John Bower, moved to the area. They found two mills already built near Conotton Creek. These mills were used for cutting wood (sawmill) and grinding grain (gristmill).
In 1804, the Bower brothers started to rebuild these important mills. Their work helped the small settlement grow.
How Bowerston Got Its Name
The area was first known as "Bower's Mills" because of the brothers and their mills. Later, its name changed to Bowersville. Finally, it became known as Bowerston.
The village was officially planned out on August 21, 1851. It was made an official village on April 2, 1883.

Conotton Creek Trail
Bowerston is the starting point of the Conotton Creek Trail. This is a special path built on old railroad tracks. It's called a "rails-to-trails" path.
The trail is 11.4 miles (18.3 kilometers) long. It's perfect for riding bikes, rollerblading, using a wheelchair, or just walking. You can find the start of the trail at the east end of Erie Street in Bowerston.
