Bowling Green started as a small settlement in 1883. A man named A.M. Chester, who came from Bowling Green, Kentucky, was one of the first people to settle here. He set up his home in the area.
In 1886, Mr. Chester gave 40 acres of land to the Florida Southern Railway. This railway helped the town grow and is still used today. As the town developed, two main industries became very important:
- Citrus Farming: Growing oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits.
- Phosphate Mining: Digging up a mineral called phosphate, which is used to make fertilizers.
The city officially became an incorporated town in 1927. This means it gained its own local government and could make its own rules.
