Boykin is a small community in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. It is called a census-designated place because the government counts its population separately. It is also an unincorporated community, meaning it does not have its own local government like a city or town.
In 2010, about 100 people lived in Boykin. The community is located on South Carolina Highway 261, about 9 miles (14 km) south of Camden. Boykin was named after John Boykin, who was one of the first people to live there.
History
On May 5, 1860, a sad accident happened at Boykin Mill Pond. A flatboat carrying more than 50 people sank after it hit a tree stump. Many people fell into the water, and at least two dozen drowned.
The Battle of Boykin's Mill was fought in Boykin on April 18, 1865. This battle was important because it was the very last battle of the American Civil War fought in South Carolina. It was also the place where the last Union officer was killed during the war.
The historic area known as Boykin's Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it is a special place recognized for its history. Another historic site, Midfield Plantation, was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Arts and Culture
Boykin is famous for being the original home of the Boykin Spaniel. This dog is the official state dog of South Carolina. It was first bred in Boykin in the early 1900s. A man named Whit Boykin experimented with different dog breeds to create this special hunting dog. The dog breed is named after him. Every year, September 1 is celebrated as Boykin Spaniel Day in South Carolina.
Each December, the community holds the Boykin Christmas Parade. It takes place in the downtown area, bringing people together for holiday fun.
