Brabant Island is a large island in a cold, icy part of the world called Antarctica. It's the second biggest island in a group called the Palmer Archipelago. You can find it between two other islands, Anvers Island and Liège Island. Brabant Island is about 59 km (37 mi) long from north to south and 30 km (19 mi) wide. Its highest point is Mount Parry, which stands tall at 2,520 m (8,268 ft). The island's middle part has two mountain ranges: the Solvay Mountains in the south and the Stribog Mountains in the center and north.

Discovering Brabant Island

A group of explorers from Belgium, led by Adrien de Gerlache, found Brabant Island between 1897 and 1899. They named it after the Belgian Province of Brabant. This was to thank the people there for helping their expedition.

Visiting Brabant Island

Brabant Island is known for being a very difficult place to visit. It's often described as "notoriously inhospitable," meaning it's not a welcoming place. Between its discovery in 1898 and 1984, there were only six known visits to the island.

However, a special expedition by different military services stayed on the island during the winter of 1984–1985. During this time, they achieved the first successful climb to the top of Mount Parry, the island's highest peak.

What Brabant Island is Made Of

Brabant Island is mostly made of different kinds of volcanic rocks. These include basalt and andesite lavas, which are rocks formed from cooled lava. There are also volcaniclastic rocks, which are made from broken pieces of volcanic material. These rocks might be from a very old volcanic group called the Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group.

Deeper inside the island, there are also granodiorite sills, which are flat sheets of rock that pushed into older rock layers. There are also younger basaltic lavas that sit on top of these older rock formations.
