History of Bradley, Maine
Bradley became an official town in 1834. In its early days, the main jobs were lumbering and working in sawmills. The town was named after Bradley Blackman, who was one of the first people to settle there.
By the 1850s, Bradley was a busy place with many mills. There were 14 mills that used a single saw to cut wood. There were also three mills with multiple saws, called gang-saw mills. Other mills made clapboard (a type of siding for houses), lath (thin strips of wood), and shingles (for roofs). The only main village back then was called Greatworks.
To help remember this important history, the Maine Forest & Logging Museum was started in 1960. It is located at Leonard's Mills and helps preserve the story of logging in Maine.
