The Mall's Story: How It Grew
Building a New Shopping Spot
The Bradley Square Mall was built by a company called Crown American, Inc. Construction started in July 1989. By the fall of 1990, most of the mall was ready.
Two of the first big stores, Hess's and Sears, opened in late 1990. The entire mall officially opened to shoppers on February 13, 1991. Kmart, another large store, opened a month later in March 1991.
Changes Over the Years
The Hess's store changed its name to Proffitt's in 1992. Later, in 2005, Proffitt's became the Belk store we know today. In 1999, the mall had a small update, and the Kmart store became bigger.
Over time, the mall has seen many stores come and go. It has worked hard to keep its shops busy and exciting for visitors.
Adding Fun and Entertainment
In 2008, plans for a new movie theater were put on hold. Instead, the mall started adding different kinds of businesses. These included a gym, a place for martial arts classes, a playground for kids, and even a church. This made the mall a place for more than just shopping.
In December 2010, the Shane Morrison Companies took over ownership of the mall.
Big Updates and New Features
A major renovation project began in May 2012. This big update cost 18 million dollars. It included improvements to the mall's entrances and many parts of the inside and outside. The Belk store also got bigger and was updated. All this work was finished in April 2013.
A new 12-screen movie theater finally opened in November 2012. It was announced by Carmike Cinemas. This theater has a special "BIGD" auditorium. It features a huge screen, sixty feet wide and three stories tall! It also has a powerful digital projector and amazing 7.1 surround sound. In 2017, AMC Theatres took over managing the movie theater.
Anchor Store Changes
The original Sears store closed down and was replaced by Dunham's Sports in late 2013. Sears later opened a smaller store elsewhere in the mall, but that one has also closed since then. In January 2016, it was announced that the Kmart store would close in March of that year.
In October 2016, the mall shared plans for the old Kmart area. The Kmart building was going to be taken down to make more parking space. This was for a new shopping area at the west end of the mall. This new area would be like a strip mall with seven new major stores.
The two mall entrances near the old Kmart were also removed. Some shops were taken out to create two new stores that could be entered from both inside the mall and from outside. A new mall entrance was also built, leading to an outdoor walkway for the new stores. This demolition work happened in October 2018.
How Bradley Square Mall Changed Cleveland Shopping
Before Bradley Square Mall, there were two smaller malls in Cleveland: The Village Mall (opened 1961) and the Cleveland Mall (opened 1974). These malls were located downtown and on Keith Street.
When Bradley Square Mall opened, it became the main shopping spot. The older malls started to lose shoppers and closed soon after. The Village Mall became the Village Green Town Center in 1998. It is now a strip mall and the main office for Check Into Cash and other businesses. The Cleveland Mall became the main office for Life Care Centers of America in 1995.
In June 2020, JCPenney announced that its store at Bradley Square Mall would close by October 2020. This was part of a plan to close many JCPenney stores across the country.
