Bradley Walker Tomlin (born August 19, 1899 – died May 11, 1953) was an important American artist. He was part of a group called the New York School. These artists created a style known as Abstract Expressionist art.
Tomlin was known for always trying to make his art perfect. He wanted his paintings to feel complete and harmonious. It was in the last five years of his life that his art truly became strong and confident.
About Bradley Walker Tomlin
Bradley Walker Tomlin was born in Syracuse, New York. He was the youngest of four children. From high school, he knew he wanted to be an artist. His art teachers helped him learn different skills. These teachers included Cornelia Moses, Hugo Gari Wagner, and Frank London, who was a special mentor to him.
Tomlin went to Syracuse University to study art from 1917 to 1921. Later, he traveled to Paris, France, to study at famous art schools like Académie Colarossi from 1923 to 1924. He came back to New York in late 1924. He started showing his paintings in 1925 at the Whitney Studio Club.
In 1926, Tomlin went back to Europe. He visited England, Italy, and Switzerland, but spent most of his time in Paris. He returned to the United States in July 1927. He also found a place he loved in Woodstock, New York, where he spent his summers painting.
During the Great Depression, Tomlin worked as a teacher. He taught at Sarah Lawrence College from 1932 to 1941. He also taught at the Buckley School and the Dalton School for shorter periods.
On May 10, 1953, Tomlin went to a party at the home of another famous artist, Jackson Pollock. He felt sick when he returned home that night. The next day, he went to the hospital. He had a heart attack and passed away that evening. Bradley Walker Tomlin was 53 years old when he died.
