Brandon is a city in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. It is the main city, or county seat, of Rankin County. The city was officially started on December 19, 1831.
In 2020, about 25,138 people lived in Brandon. It is a suburb of Jackson, which is the state capital. Brandon is part of the larger Jackson Metropolitan Area.

History of Brandon
Brandon is named after Gerard Brandon. He was the Governor of Mississippi in the early 1800s.
In 1892, a local newspaper called The News began publishing. The Brandon Bank opened in 1900. Another bank, The Rankin County Bank, started in 1906.
By 1900, Brandon had many important places. These included a school, a telephone and telegraph office, and a saw mill. There were also two places for horses, two cotton gins, and two hotels. The city had six churches and about fifteen to twenty stores. At that time, about 775 people lived in Brandon.
Geography and Size
Brandon is located east of the state capital, Jackson. The city covers a total area of about 25.75 square miles (66.70 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
