Brandsville was platted in 1883, and named after Michael Brand, the original owner of the town site. A post office called Brandsville has been in operation since 1883.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.52 square miles (1.35 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 161 people, 61 households, and 39 families living in the city. The population density was 309.6 inhabitants per square mile (119.5/km2). There were 79 housing units at an average density of 151.9 per square mile (58.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.44% White, 0.62% Native American, 8.70% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.42% of the population.
There were 61 households, of which 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 13.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.1% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
