Brandywine Village, Ohio was once a small community located in Ohio, United States. You can find its old location near Brandywine Falls in Summit County. Today, this area is part of the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The village site sits right on the edge of two townships: Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills.

History of Brandywine Village

Brandywine Village started in 1814. A man named George Wallace built a sawmill here. He used the strong water power from Brandywine Falls to run his mill. The village quickly grew into a busy place.

Over the next ten years, more buildings appeared. These included a gristmill (for grinding grain), a woolen mill, and about twelve houses. There was even a whiskey distillery. In 1824, George Wallace gave his property to his sons. They created the Wallace Brothers Company. Their businesses did very well for about 30 years.

Why the Village Disappeared

But over time, Brandywine's success faded. The Ohio and Erie Canal was built. Later, railroads became popular. These new ways of shipping goods helped bigger cities like Akron and Cleveland grow. Smaller towns like Brandywine were left behind.

What Remains Today

Not much is left of Brandywine Village now. You can still see a barn and a house built by James Wallace in 1848. These are some of the only original buildings left. Near the falls, you might spot some old foundations. These are the stone bases of the old gristmill.

The James Wallace House has been fixed up. It is now a cozy bed and breakfast called The Inn at Brandywine Falls.
