Branksome: A Neighbourhood in Darlington
Branksome is mostly made up of homes and buildings that were built by the local council. Construction of these homes started in the late 1940s and continued into the 1970s.
Homes in Branksome
Since the 1980s, some of the houses and flats built by the council have been sold. This happened under a government plan called 'right to buy'. This plan allowed people who were renting council homes to buy them. However, many homes in Branksome are still rented out by the Housing Department of Darlington Borough Council.
In 2003 and 2004, people living in these homes were asked if they wanted the council to keep managing their rented properties. After talking to many tenants, the Housing Department continued to manage the homes. This showed that residents preferred the local council to look after their housing.
Local Government
Branksome is part of an area called the Cockerton West Ward within Darlington Borough. A 'ward' is like a local district. Every four years, people in this ward vote to choose two councillors. These councillors are local representatives who help make decisions for the community. They work to improve services and address local issues in the area.
The Old Railway Line
On the northern side of Branksome, there used to be an old railway line. This line connected Darlington to Barnard Castle railway station. When Branksome was first built, you could follow this railway line all the way to Barnard Castle. Today, there is not much left of the old railway line. Farmers have mostly taken back the land where the tracks once lay.
