History of Breed
The community of Breed has an interesting past. It was named after its first postmaster, George M. Breed.
Early Settlers and Post Office
A post office opened in Breed in 1888. It served the community for many years before closing in 1966. The very first person to settle in this area was James Knight. Many early settlers arrived by walking along old trails made by Native American people.
Roads and Growth
The first road in Oconto County was built in 1860. In Breed itself, the first road was built in 1885. This road later became part of important state highways: Highway 32 and Highway 64. As more people moved to the area for farming, a general store opened in 1887. This helped the community grow.
Railroad and Community Life
In 1896, the Chicago and Northwestern railroad line was built from Mountain to Breed. The North Star hotel became a central spot in the community. At one time, Breed had a school, several churches, a cheese factory, and many farms. Over time, many of these businesses closed. Today, Breed is mostly a small community with homes.
