Mountain is a small town located in Oconto County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In the year 2000, about 860 people lived there.

Communities in Mountain

The town of Mountain includes a few smaller communities:

  • Bonita is a quiet area located southwest of the main community of Mountain. It doesn't have many buildings.
  • Mountain is the main part of the town. It's an unincorporated census designated place. This means it's a recognized area for population counting, but it doesn't have its own separate local government. It's mostly found where two main roads, WIS 32/64 and County Road W, meet.
  • Kingston is another small, unincorporated community. It's mainly located at the intersection of Kingston Road and W Shore Drive. Only a few homes are in this immediate area. It used to be called Kingston Station because a railroad once ran through it.

History of Mountain

The town of Mountain was not always called by this name. Until August 1997, it was known as Armstrong. The name was changed to Mountain at that time.

The town of Armstrong was first created in 1897. It was separated from the town of How. When it was first formed, Armstrong was much larger than today. It included the areas that are now the towns of Doty, Lakewood, and the current town of Mountain.

Geography of Mountain

Mountain covers a total area of about 72.7 square miles (188.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 71.6 square miles (185.4 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1.1 square miles (2.8 square kilometers), is water. This means that about 1.51% of the town's total area is covered by water.

Population and People

Based on the census from the year 2000, there were 860 people living in the town of Mountain. These people lived in 380 households, and 248 of these were families. The population density was about 12 people for every square mile (or 4.6 people per square kilometer).

Most of the people in Mountain were White, making up about 98.26% of the population. There were also small numbers of Native American and Asian residents. About 0.93% of the population identified as being from two or more races. A small percentage, 0.35%, were of Hispanic or Latino background.

The average household in Mountain had about 2.26 people. The average family size was slightly larger, with about 2.76 people.
