Early Life and High School Football
Brett Hundley grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and went to Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona. He was a star player on the school's football team, the Wolves.
During his junior year, he threw for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns. In his senior year, he improved even more, throwing for 2,348 yards and 20 touchdowns. As a starting quarterback in high school, Brett had a great record of 16 wins and 8 losses. Experts at Rivals.com thought he was one of the best "dual-threat" quarterbacks (meaning he could both throw and run the ball well) in his age group.
College Football Career at UCLA
Starting Strong as a Freshman
After taking a year to practice and learn (called "redshirting") in 2011, Brett Hundley became the starting quarterback for the UCLA Bruins in the 2012 season. In his very first college game against Rice, his first play was an amazing 72-yard run for a touchdown! UCLA won that game 49–24.
In his second game, UCLA played against the No. 16 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. Brett threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, helping UCLA win 36–30. He also led UCLA to a big win over their rivals, the USC Trojans, for the first time in six years. UCLA made it to the Pac-12 Championship Game that year and finished the season ranked No. 17 in the country. Brett set a new school record with 3,740 passing yards in a single season.
Leading the Bruins to More Wins
In 2013, Brett helped the Bruins win 10 games. They beat USC again, making it two wins in a row against their rivals. UCLA also won the Sun Bowl game 42–12 against Virginia Tech. Brett was named the co-most valuable player of that game because he ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 226 yards and two more touchdowns. His 748 rushing yards that year were the third most by a UCLA quarterback in a single season.
Some professional football teams thought Brett might be one of the best quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL draft if he left college early. However, he decided to stay at UCLA for his junior year.
Breaking Records in His Junior Year
In the 2014 season, Brett tried to show professional scouts that he was a great passer by running the ball less at first. The team started with four straight wins. Later in the season, Brett started running more, including a game where he ran for 131 yards.
During his junior year, Brett broke two major UCLA records:
- He became the school's all-time leader in touchdown passes, passing the old record of 68.
- He also became the school's career leader in total offense (a combination of passing and rushing yards).
He finished his college career with 9,966 passing yards, which is the second most in UCLA history. He also rushed for 1,747 yards, which is the second most for a quarterback in UCLA history. After the season, Brett entered the 2015 NFL draft. He was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round.
