Mitella breweri, also known as Brewer's mitrewort or Brewer's bishop's cap, is a cool flowering plant. It belongs to the saxifrage family, which is a group of plants often found in rocky or mountainous areas. This plant grows naturally in western North America, from British Columbia in Canada all the way down to central California (especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains) and Nevada in the United States. You can usually find it in damp places like wet meadows, forests, and mountain areas.

What is Brewer's Mitrewort?

Brewer's mitrewort is a type of perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years and doesn't have a woody stem like a tree or shrub. It grows from a special underground stem called a rhizome. A rhizome helps the plant spread and store energy. This plant can grow to be about 30 to 40 centimeters tall, which is roughly the length of a school ruler.

Leaves and Stems

Most of the leaves on a Brewer's mitrewort grow in a cluster around the bottom of the main stem. These leaves are usually round and can be several centimeters wide. Their edges are not smooth; instead, they have dull, rounded sections that look a bit like small teeth or lobes. The main stem stands up straight and tall.

Unique Flowers

The plant's flowers grow in a group called an inflorescence. This group of flowers usually appears along one side of the stem. You might see many flowers on one plant, sometimes even more than 50! The flowers themselves are quite special. They are shaped like a shallow saucer and have five greenish petals. What makes them really stand out is that each petal is divided into many narrow, thin parts, almost like tiny whiskers.

Other Names for the Plant

Sometimes, you might see this plant called Pectiantia breweri. This is another scientific name used by some plant experts, especially by an organization called Calflora, which studies plants in California. It's common for plants to have a few different scientific names as scientists learn more about them.
