Discovering Lemmon's Brickellbush
Lemmon's brickellbush is a small shrub. It usually grows up to about 50 centimeters (20 inches) tall. That's roughly the height of a large houseplant. It produces many small flower heads. These flower heads have a pale yellow-green color. They are made up of tiny disc florets, which are the small, tube-shaped flowers in the center of a daisy. Unlike some daisies, this plant does not have ray florets, which are the petal-like parts that stick out.
Where Does It Grow?
This plant is native to certain parts of North America. You can find it growing naturally in northeastern and north-central Mexico. Specifically, it grows in the states of Chihuahua and Coahuila. It also lives in the southwestern United States. This includes southern New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, and western Texas.
Who Was Lemmon?
The plant is named after an interesting person named John Gill Lemmon (1831–1908). He was an American botanist, which means he was a scientist who studied plants. John Gill Lemmon was married to another famous American botanist, Sara Plummer Lemmon (1836–1923). Scientists often name new species after people who have contributed to science or helped discover the plant.
Different Kinds of Lemmon's Brickellbush
Scientists sometimes find slight differences within a plant species. These are called "varieties." For Lemmon's brickellbush, there are two main varieties:
- Brickellia lemmonii var. conduplicata (B.L.Rob.) B.L.Turner
* This variety is found in New Mexico, Texas, Chihuahua, and Coahuila.
- Brickellia lemmonii var. lemmonii
* This variety grows in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Chihuahua, and Coahuila.
