Bridei IV facts for kids
Bridei son of Der-Ilei (also known as Bruide mac Derilei) was a powerful king of the Picts, a group of people who lived in what is now Scotland. He ruled from 697 until his death in 706. Bridei became king after the previous ruler, Taran, was removed from power in 697.
Bridei was the brother of Nechtan, who took over as king after him. Some historians believe that Bridei's father was Dargart mac Finguine, a leader from Dál Riata. Dargart's family controlled areas like Cowal and the Isle of Bute. We don't know much about Bridei's mother, Der-Ilei.
Bridei had other family members, including brothers or half-brothers, who are mentioned in old Irish records. These include Talorgan son of Drest, Congus son of Dargart, and Cináed son of Der-Ilei.
Important Actions as King
The Law of Innocents
In 697, King Bridei was one of many important leaders from Ireland and Scotland who supported a special agreement called the Cáin Adomnáin. This agreement was also known as the Lex Innocentium, or "Law of Innocents." It was signed at a place called Birr. This law was very important because it aimed to protect women, children, and church members during times of war. By signing it, Bridei showed his commitment to peace and justice.
Battles and Conflicts
During Bridei's rule, there were some important battles and events:
- In 698, the Picts fought against the Saxons. The Irish historians reported that a Saxon leader named Berhtred was killed in this battle.
- In 704, there was a defeat for the Dál Riata people. This battle likely happened near Loch Lomond or the River Leven. It's thought that the Britons from Alt Clut (another ancient kingdom) were responsible for this defeat, rather than the Picts.
- In 701, there was a conflict on the Isle of Skye. A leader named Conaing was killed. This was probably a fight between different groups within the Dál Riata people themselves.
- The Chronicon Scotorum, an old Irish record, also mentions that the winter of 700 was extremely cold. It was so cold that "the sea froze between Ireland and Scotland."
End of His Reign
King Bridei son of Der-Ilei died in 706. His death is recorded in important historical texts like the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Tigernach. After his death, his brother Nechtan became the new king of the Picts.
