Discovering Bridge, Oregon
Bridge is a small community in the beautiful state of Oregon. It's a place where people live without a separate town government. Instead, it's part of the larger county. This means the county handles services like roads and public safety for Bridge.
Where is Bridge Located?
Bridge is found in Coos County. This county is on the coast of Oregon. The community is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) east of a town called Myrtle Point. It's also very close to the Middle Fork Coquille River. This river is a branch of the larger Coquille River.
A Glimpse into Bridge's Past
Bridge has a history that goes back many years. It was once an important stop for travelers. The community got its name from a bridge over the nearby river.
The Story of the Post Office Names
Before Bridge had its own post office, there was one nearby called "Angora." This post office started in August 1883. But even before Angora, there was a post office named "Enchanted Prairie." That one ran from 1870 until 1883. When the name changed to Angora, the post office moved to the home of the new postmaster. The Angora post office moved two more times after that.
In July 1894, the "Bridge" post office was opened. It was named after a bridge over the river. The Post Office Department didn't want to use the name Angora again. Later, a different Angora post office was opened in Lincoln County. The Bridge post office closed in 1945.
What Was Bridge Like in the Past?
Bridge was once a busy place for travelers. It was a stagecoach stop. This is where horses were changed for the stagecoaches. In 1915, the community had several important businesses. There was a creamery (where dairy products were made). There was also a sawmill (for cutting wood) and a gristmill (for grinding grain). Bridge also had a school and a Christian Church.
By 1940, Bridge had a population of 39 people. As of 1990, the community still had a store and a tavern. Today, the Church of the Brethren owns a camp called Camp Myrtlewood. This camp is located south of Bridge. The Christian Church, which started in 1900, now operates as the Bridge Community Church.
