History of Bridgewater

The State of Maine became its own state in 1820, separating from Massachusetts. That's when the name Bridgewater was first used for this area.

Before that, in 1803, the land was divided into sections. These sections were used to help fund public academies (schools) in Portland and Bridgewater. The town of Bridgewater was officially formed on March 2, 1858.
