It runs from Sudmoor Point in the north to Artherfield Point in the south. The bay is a mix of mud, sand, and shells on the seabed. The beach itself is mostly made of shingle, which means small, smooth stones.
Amazing Coastal Features
Along the coast of Brighstone Bay, you'll find several 'chines'. A chine is a deep, narrow valley that has been cut into the soft cliffs by a stream or river flowing to the sea. Some of these chines, like Grange Chine, even have streams such as the Buddle Brook flowing through them.
Like many parts of the Isle of Wight's coast, Brighstone Bay is slowly changing. This is due to something called coastal erosion. Coastal erosion happens when the sea wears away the land, causing cliffs to crumble and the coastline to move backwards.
Shipwrecks and Hidden Rocks
Sticking out from the coast of Brighstone Bay is a rocky area called Brighstone Ledge. This is one of several ledges found along the 'Back of the Wight' – the southern coast of the island. Brighstone Ledge has been the site of many shipwrecks over the years. During big storms, ships could be pushed onto these hidden rocks, causing them to sink.

The best way to see Brighstone Bay is by walking along the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. This path follows the entire bay from the top of the cliffs. From here, you can enjoy amazing views of the coastline, the sea, and the changing landscape below. It's a great spot for a walk and to see the natural beauty of the island.
