History of Brighton Plantation
Brighton Plantation has an interesting past. It was first known by a longer name: T2 R1 Bingham's Kennebec Purchase.
Becoming a Town
On May 11, 1816, this area officially became a town. It was given the name North Hill.
Renaming and Changes
Later, on January 29, 1827, the town's name was changed to Brighton. Over the years, Brighton gave some of its land to a nearby town called Athens. This happened in 1838 and again in 1862.
Becoming a Plantation
In 1895, Brighton changed its status. It stopped being a full "town" and became a "plantation" instead. In Maine, a plantation is a smaller, less formal type of local government.
