Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia (Chinese: 林青霞; pinyin: Lín Qīngxiá; born 3 November 1954) is a famous actress from Taiwan. She is known as an icon in Chinese language movies. She played many different roles in films from both Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Her Life and Career
Brigitte Lin was born in Chiayi, Taiwan. Her parents moved to Taiwan from Shandong, China, in 1949. In 1972, a film producer discovered her on the streets of Taipei. She had just finished high school and was getting ready for university.
Becoming a Star
Brigitte Lin's first movie was Outside the Window (1973). This film quickly made her a star. In the 1970s, she became part of a famous group called the "Two Chins, Two Lins." This group included her, Joan Lin, Charlie Chin, and Chin Han. They starred in many romantic movies based on novels by Chiung Yao. These movies were very popular in Taiwan. By 1982, Brigitte Lin had played the main role in 12 of Chiung Yao's films.
She won her first award, Best Actress, in 1975. This was at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival for her role in Eight Hundred Heroes (1976). In this movie, she played a brave girl scout.
Success in Hong Kong Films
After starring in many romantic films, Brigitte Lin took a break in 1979. She went to the U.S. for about a year and a half to study and relax.
Later, she became known as a "screen goddess" by Chinese movie fans. She worked with famous Hong Kong directors like Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark. Some of her successful movies from this time include Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983) and Police Story (1985).
In 1990, she won another Best Actress award. This was at the 27th Golden Horse Awards for her role in Red Dust. She played a Chinese writer who fell in love with a Japanese person.
Famous for Unique Roles
Brigitte Lin is especially famous for playing characters who dress as men. This was a common practice in Chinese movies and operas. Her first male role was Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber (1977).
She also played a revolutionary woman dressed as a man in Peking Opera Blues (1986). In Royal Tramp II (1992), she was a female leader who dressed like a man. She even played twin brother and sister roles in Ashes of Time (1994).
Her most famous role is probably Dongfang Bubai in Swordsman II (1992). This movie was a huge success. Time magazine even listed her performance among the 10 greatest in cinema history.
After this, she starred in many other popular martial arts movies. These include New Dragon Gate Inn (1992) and The Bride with White Hair (1993).
At the peak of her career, Brigitte Lin was one of the most popular actresses. She starred in over 100 movies. She helped boost Taiwan's film industry in the 1970s. Then, she became even more popular in Hong Kong in the 1990s. She retired from acting in 1994. Her last movie role was in Ashes of Time.
Personal Life
Brigitte Lin's family originally came from Shandong, China.
She married Hong Kong businessman Michael Ying in 1994. She has two daughters, Eileen (born 1996) and Melani (born 2001). She is also a stepmother to Claudine Ying.
In 2008, she made a public appearance at the Ashes of Time Redux screening. This was her first public event since her marriage. In 2015, she appeared on a Chinese reality TV show called Up Idol.
