The British Cemetery in Madrid is a special burial ground in Madrid, Spain. It is also known as Cementerio británico de Madrid or Cementerio de los Ingleses. This cemetery opened in 1854 in the Carabanchel area. The first burials happened that same year. Today, the cemetery is mostly full, so new burials are rare. However, people can still bury urns with ashes there.
A Special Place for Burials
This cemetery is like many other British cemeteries around the world. They were created after a time called the Reformation. During this period, some governments and churches did not allow people of different faiths to be buried in their main cemeteries. So, special places like this one were needed for them.
Who is Buried Here?
For over 150 years, people of many different faiths have been buried here. This includes Anglican, Protestant, Orthodox, and Jewish people who passed away in Madrid. In total, about 1,000 people are buried in this cemetery.

- There are 63 Germans.
- 49 Americans.

The cemetery also holds the graves of soldiers. Three British Army members from World War I are buried here. Also, one Royal Air Force officer from World War II rests here. These graves are cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This group looks after the graves of military personnel from the Commonwealth nations.
