The British Empire Range is a group of tall mountains. You can find them on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. This mountain range is one of the most northern in the world. It's part of the Arctic Cordillera, which is a huge chain of mountains in the Arctic.
Only a few other ranges are even further north. These include the Challenger Mountains and the United States Range. The tallest mountain in the British Empire Range is called Barbeau Peak.
Naming the Range
The British Empire Range got its name from Gordon Noel Humphreys. He was part of the Oxford University Ellesmere Land Expedition. This expedition explored the area.
Another member of the group was Edward Shackleton. In 1937, he said that Humphreys named it this way because he was "a great imperialist." This means Humphreys strongly believed in the British Empire and wanted to show its power.
