The Challenger Mountains are a mountain range located on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. This amazing range holds a special record: it's the most northern mountain range in the entire world! It's also part of the larger Arctic Cordillera mountain system.
The highest point in the Challenger Mountains is Commonwealth Mountain. This peak reaches an impressive height of 2,225 m (7,300 ft). Right next to the Challenger Mountains, to their east, you'll find another range called the United States Range.
Exploring the Challenger Mountains
The Challenger Mountains are found within Quttinirpaaq National Park. This park is the second most northerly park in the world. Only Northeast Greenland National Park in Greenland is further north.
Unique Features
Even though it's a mountain range, you can find some low-lying lakes here. These lakes are located along an area called Taconite Inlet. The land around these lakes rises sharply. The difference in height between the low areas and the high peaks can be more than 1,250 m (4,101 ft). This shows how dramatic the landscape is in this very northern part of Canada.
