The Northeast Greenland National Park is a huge protected area in Greenland, which is part of Denmark. It is the biggest national park on Earth. Its size is about 972,000 square kilometers (375,000 square miles). This means the park is larger than many countries! If it were a country, it would be the 31st largest, just a bit smaller than Egypt.

This park is the only national park in Greenland. It is also the most northern national park in the world. Its northernmost point reaches even further north than Quttinirpaaq National Park in Canada.

Park History and Establishment

The Northeast Greenland National Park was first created on May 22, 1974. It was made from the northern part of what was then the Ittoqqortoormiit Municipality in East Greenland. This area was mostly empty of people.

In 1988, the park grew even bigger. About 272,000 square kilometers (105,000 square miles) were added. This new part came from the northeastern area of North Greenland. In January 1977, the park was also named an international biosphere reserve. This means it is a special place recognized for its unique nature and wildlife.

The park is home to many incredible animals. Near the coast, you can find between 5,000 and 15,000 musk oxen. This is about 40% of all the musk oxen in the world! Many polar bears and walrus also live here.

Other mammals you might see include the arctic fox, stoat, collared lemming, and arctic hare. In the ocean, there are ringed seals, bearded seals, harp seals, and hooded seals. You can also spot narwhals and Beluga whales swimming in the waters.
