British Indian Ocean Territory Police facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The British Indian Ocean Territory Police (BIOT Police) helps keep the peace in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). This special territory is located in the Indian Ocean, about halfway between Tanzania and Indonesia. Unlike many places, BIOT doesn't have people living there permanently. Most of the people you'll find there are members of the British Armed Forces and United States Armed Forces.

The BIOT Police are made up of special officers called Royal Overseas Police Officers (ROPOs). These officers are usually members of the Royal Marines or the Royal Navy. They work to ensure safety and order in this unique part of the world.

Police Officer Roles

As of 2015, the BIOT Police included:

  • Assistant Senior Police Officer (ROPO 2): This officer helps the Senior Police Officer with their duties. They are trained in special investigations and crime scene work.
  • Other ROPOs: The team also includes other officers from the Royal Navy Police, Royal Military Police, Royal Air Force Police, and Royal Marines Police. Some of these officers are trained in special investigations or work with police dogs.
