British paintings in the Museo del Prado facts for kids
The collection of twenty-eight British paintings in the Museo del Prado is a special group of artworks from Britain. It's one of only two big collections of British art in Spain. The other is the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, which was put together by José Lázaro Galdiano and his wife.
There isn't much British art in Spain's old royal collection. This is because of disagreements between Spain and Britain long ago, especially after the English Reformation. These paintings joined the museum through gifts and purchases. Most of them arrived in the 20th century.
This collection focuses only on British artists. So, famous painters from other countries who worked in England, like Antony van Dyck, are not part of this specific group. Most of these 28 paintings are portraits. They were created between 1750 and 1850. You'll find paintings by famous artists like David Roberts, Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Gainsborough, and Joshua Reynolds.
