Where is Britton's Neck?
Britton's Neck is located in the southern part of Marion County. You can find it along SC 908. It's south of a place called Centenary and north of US 378.
This area sits between two rivers: the Great Pee Dee River and the Little Pee Dee River. It stretches north from where the Little Pee Dee River joins the Great Pee Dee River.
How Britton's Neck Got Its Name
Britton's Neck is one of the oldest settlements in Marion County. It was named after a family of brothers: Francis, Timothy, Daniel, Moses, Joseph, and Philip Britton. They moved to this area around 1735 or 1736. Their father, also named Francis Britton, had come to Carolina by 1697.
Britton's Ferry
The Britton family also started a ferry called Britton's Ferry. This ferry was on the Great Pee Dee River. It was a very important crossing point. It connected three different areas: Williamsburg, Georgetown, and Marion County. The ferry was officially set up by Francis Britton and two other people in 1747.
Britton's Neck in History
During the American Revolution, Britton's Neck was a place where many people supported the American side (the Patriots). Because of this, Britton's Ferry became very important to both the Patriots and the British. Controlling the ferry meant controlling who could cross the river and move supplies or troops.
Local Community
Today, there is a school near the community called Brittons Neck Elementary School. It serves the children living in and around Britton's Neck.
