A Glimpse into Broad Run's Past
Long ago, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Broad Run was a busy place. It was a thriving community, especially because of the railroads. Trains were a very important way to travel and move goods back then.
However, as trains became less popular, the town started to shrink. Today, you can still see a few old homes from that time. There are also some stone foundations and chimneys where buildings once stood. You might even spot an old ramp that was used for loading freight trains, though it's now covered in weeds and no longer used.
Historic Sites and Battles
One of the most important historical spots in Broad Run is Chapman's Mill. It's also known as Beverley's Mill. This old mill is about two-thirds of a mile southeast of the center of Broad Run.
A very important event in American history happened right here: the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap. This battle was part of the American Civil War. Even though it seemed small at the time, it played a big role in later events of the war. Both the Thoroughfare Gap Battlefield and a historic place called Galemont are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important sites to protect and remember.
Broad Run Today
Today, the Broad Run postal area is mostly a place where people live. Most of it is in Fauquier County, but a small part in the northeast is in Prince William County.
You won't find many big stores here. Instead, there are often small businesses run from people's homes, or farms. For example, Sharkawi Farms grows many different spices that are sold locally. Also, Meriwether Vineyard is home to Pearmund Cellars Winery, where they make wine.
The southern part of the Broad Run postal area also includes what used to be the town of New Baltimore. However, much of what people call modern-day New Baltimore is actually outside the Broad Run postal area.
If you explore the large wooded areas around Broad Run, you might discover some very old building foundations and graveyards. Some of these date back over 200 years, offering a peek into the lives of people who lived here long ago.
