Academy Award Nomination and a Rule Change

Bruce Broughton's song "Alone yet Not Alone" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2014. This was for the film with the same name. However, the nomination was later taken back.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences found that Broughton had contacted other members of the Academy. He was a former governor and a member of the music branch committee. The Academy said that using his position to promote his own song created an unfair advantage.

The Academy's president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, explained that even if the contact was well-meaning, it looked like an unfair advantage. Not everyone agreed with the Academy's decision.
