The film came out on July 1, 1994, in the United States. It didn't make a lot of money when it first came out. However, over time, many people started to love it. Now, it is known as a "cult film," which means it has a strong fan base.

The Story of Baby's Day Out

The movie begins with a baby named Bennington Austin "Bink" Cotwell IV. He lives in a huge house in a Chicago suburb. His parents, Laraine and Bennington Austin "Bing" Cotwell III, are very wealthy. Bink is about to be featured in the newspaper's social pages.

Three silly criminals, Eddie, Norby, and Veeko, pretend to be baby photographers. They trick Bink's parents and kidnap him. They plan to ask for a lot of money, $5 million, to return him.

Bink's Escape

The criminals take Bink to their apartment. But they find it hard to control him. Norby tries to make Bink sleep by reading his favorite storybook, Baby's Day Out. Bink calls the book "Boo-boo." Norby gets bored and falls asleep himself, leaving Bink alone.

Bink looks at his book and sees a bird on the page. Then he sees a real bird outside the window. He follows the bird and crawls out of the apartment. He gets away from the kidnappers! Eddie falls into a garbage bin while trying to catch him. Norby and Veeko pull Eddie out, and they start chasing Bink across the city.

The Chase Begins

The FBI arrives at Bink's mansion. Agent Dale Grissom tries to find clues with Bink's parents and his nanny, Gilbertine. Meanwhile, Bink is outside on the ground. He finds another part of his book – a blue bus. He crawls onto the bus.

The criminals realize Bink is escaping and chase the bus in their van. But they can't catch him. On the bus, Bink crawls into a bag belonging to a lady. She gets off the bus soon after. When the criminals finally catch the bus, Bink is gone! They follow the lady, which leads to a funny mix-up.

Adventures in the City

Bink then crawls into a revolving door at a department store. An employee from the store's day care center stops him. She thinks he is a baby who escaped from her center. Bink soon escapes from the store too. He even takes a ride in a taxi!

The criminals try to follow him, but they keep getting hurt. Bink makes his way to the city zoo. The criminals are shocked to find him in the ape house. He is with a western lowland gorilla. The gorilla acts like a mother to Bink and doesn't hurt him. The criminals try to get Bink back. But the gorilla notices them. She hits Veeko's hand and throws Norby into the air. She even throws Eddie against the bars of a cage!

The Final Chase

The criminals finally corner Bink in the zoo's park. But two friendly police officers stop them. The officers notice their van's engine is running. Eddie hides Bink under his coat. Bink finds Eddie's cigarette lighter and sets his crotch on fire! Bink then sneaks away. Veeko puts out the fire by stomping on Eddie.

They follow Bink to a construction site. They still can't catch him. Veeko gets thrown into a garbage truck. Norby falls into wet cement. Eddie gets stuck on a crane after being covered in glue. The sun sets, and Bink leaves with the construction crew. The criminals give up and go home.

Bink is Found

Bink's parents hear about sightings of him in the city. Gilbertine, the nanny, figures out Bink is following his "Boo-boo" book. She guesses he will go to the Old Soldiers' Home next. They find him there!

On the way home, Bink points to the criminals' apartment and says "Boo-Boo." The FBI makes the criminals return Bink's book. Then, they arrest them. Back home, Bink's parents put him to bed. They talk about getting his picture taken by a normal photographer. But Bink wakes up, ready to read another book called Baby's Trip to China!
