Working with President Bush

On July 20, 2006, President George W. Bush spoke at the NAACP meeting. This was the first time he had addressed the organization during his presidency. White House spokesman Tony Snow said that President Bush agreed to speak because of Bruce Gordon's balanced views.

Why Gordon Left the NAACP

Bruce Gordon resigned from his role in March 2007. He said that he had different ideas from some members of the board. He wanted to find new ways to help the African American community. He felt his plans were not supported by enough board members. He stated, "I did not step into the role to be a caretaker, to be dictated to."
