History of Brunegg

Brunegg was first mentioned in old writings around the 1100s. Back then, it was called Bruneco. Later, in 1273, it was known as Brunegge.

Brunegg Castle

Brunegg Castle was built on a hill in the 1200s. This castle, along with Wildegg Castle nearby, helped protect the borders for the Habsburg family. Knights from the Habsburg family lived in the castle.

In 1415, soldiers from Bern tried to take over the castle. They stopped their attack after a counter-attack. However, Bern eventually took control of the Aargau region. The castle then went to the Segenser or Segesser family. For many years, from 1538 to 1798, the castle was under the control of the governor of Lenzburg.

In 1815, the Hünerwadel family from Lenzburg bought the castle. Later, the current owners, the Salis family, inherited it through marriage. For a long time, the castle wasn't well cared for. In the 1600s, strong storms damaged it twice. But in 1805–06, parts of the castle, like the main tower and other buildings, were fixed up. The roof was also rebuilt.

Village Development

The village of Brunegg got its name and started because of the castle. At first, it was part of the Habsburgs' personal land. In the 1300s, the castle owners were given the right to handle local legal matters.

Over time, Brunegg's district changed. In the 1800s, it was part of the Brugg district. But since 1840, it has been in the Lenzburg district.

Originally, Brunegg was part of the Windisch church area. Since 1526, it has belonged to the Birr church area. Brunegg got its very own Reformed Church in 1967.

Modern Brunegg

For hundreds of years, Brunegg was mostly a farming village. People grew grains and grapes on the hills. In 1950, about a quarter of the workers were farmers. By 1990, this number dropped to only 5%. More people started working in factories (28%) and in service jobs (67%).

The A1 motorway opened in 1970. This big road goes near the edge of Brunegg. An exit from the motorway in Mägenwil leads right through the town. This easy access to the motorway helped many businesses that deal with transport and logistics to set up shop in Brunegg. Since 1990, there have been more jobs available in Brunegg than people living there.

Geography of Brunegg

Brunegg covers an area of about 1.56 square kilometers (0.6 square miles). A big part of this land, about 41.7%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 25.6% of the area. The rest, about 29.5%, is built up with buildings and roads.

Most of the built-up area includes industrial buildings, homes, and roads. About 7.1% is for factories, 9.0% for houses, and 10.3% for transportation like roads.

Brunegg is located in the Lenzburg district. It sits on the southern edge of an area called the Birrfeld. The town itself is a Haufendorf village. This means it's an old-fashioned village with buildings packed closely together around a central area, not planned in a grid. Brunegg Castle is on a ridge of the nearby Kestenberg mountain.
