Bruno Hortelano's Early Life and Athletics Journey
Bruno Hortelano was born in Wollongong, Australia. His parents were from Spain. When he was very young, his family moved to Canada. He grew up in Burlington, Ontario.
Sports and School Years
As a kid, Bruno tried many sports. He enjoyed taekwondo and soccer. In high school, he played American football. He also joined the Burlington Track Club. He started competing in the 100-meter race. Later, he also ran the 110-meter hurdles.
Bruno went to Assumption Catholic Secondary School from 2005 to 2009. He was named the best sprinter twice. In 2009, he was a finalist in the 100-meter race at a big championship in Toronto. He ran it in 10.76 seconds.
College and Genetics Studies
After high school, Bruno went to Cornell University in New York. He studied genetics there and graduated in 2014. While at Cornell, he continued to compete in athletics for the university team.

Breaking Spanish Records
In 2013, Bruno represented Spain at the World Championships. He ran the 200 meters and reached the semifinals. He even set a new Spanish record with a time of 20.47 seconds.
In 2016, he competed in the European Championships. He won a gold medal in the 200 meters. He broke his own Spanish record again, running 20.39 seconds in the semifinals. Later that year, at the Summer Olympics in Rio, he broke his 200-meter record once more. He ran it in 20.12 seconds.
Overcoming Challenges
In September 2016, Bruno had a serious hand injury. But he worked hard and made a full recovery. By 2018, he was back to his best. He set new national records in both the 200 meters and 400 meters that year.
Bruno Hortelano announced his retirement from athletics in May 2025.
