Bryan Volpenhein (born August 18, 1976) is an American rower. He is famous for competing in the Olympic Games three times. He took part in the Olympics in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

Bryan Volpenhein: An Olympic Rower

Bryan Volpenhein was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went to Kings High School in Kings Mills, Ohio. After high school, he attended Ohio State University. There, he was part of The Ohio State University Crew Club. He worked with coaches John Gutrich, Tim Carrigg, and Lou Renzulli. Bryan finished his studies in 2002. Later, after the 2005 World Rowing Championships, he also studied culinary arts in Seattle.

Bryan's Amazing Rowing Career

Bryan Volpenhein is the only person to win the USRowing Male Athlete of the Year award twice. He won it in 2002 and again in 2004. In 2004, he and his team won a gold medal at the Olympics. Because of this, they were named "USATODAY.com's U.S. Olympic Athlete of the Week."

Olympic Success

Bryan had great success at the Olympics.

  • At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he won a gold medal. This was for the men's eight rowing event.
  • At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, he won a bronze medal. This was also in the men's eight event.

World Championships and World Cup

Bryan also achieved many medals at other major rowing events:

  • He won gold medals at the World Rowing Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2005.
  • He earned a silver medal at the World Championships in 2003.
  • He also won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2002.
  • In the World Rowing Cup, he won gold medals in 2001, 2002, and 2004.

Bryan's Coaching Journey

After his rowing career, Bryan Volpenhein became a coach. In the 2019–2020 season, he became the head coach for the University of Pennsylvania Men's Heavyweight Rowing Team. Before that, he worked at the University of San Diego as the Training and Technical Director. This was during the 2018–2019 season. He also coached junior men's varsity at the San Diego Rowing Club in 2019.

In August 2022, Bryan left his coaching job at the University of Pennsylvania. He moved his family to support his wife, Sarah Trowbridge. She became the head coach for The University of Oklahoma Women's Rowing team.
