History of the Stadium's Name

When the stadium first opened, it was called Denny Stadium. It was named after George Hutchenson Denny. He was the president of the University of Alabama at that time.

Later, in 1975, the stadium's name was changed. It became Bryant–Denny Stadium. This change was made to honor a legendary coach. His name was Paul "Bear" Bryant. He was a very important figure in college football history.

How Big is Bryant–Denny Stadium?

Bryant–Denny Stadium is a really large stadium. It can hold over 92,000 fans! This makes it one of the biggest stadiums in the United States.

It is the fourth largest stadium in the SEC. The SEC is a major college sports league. It is also the eleventh largest stadium in the entire U.S. It is the 17th largest non-racing stadium in the world.

Always a Full House

Fans love watching games at Bryant–Denny Stadium. Since 1988, every single game played at the stadium has been completely sold out. This means there are no empty seats! It shows how much support the Crimson Tide team has.

Growing Even Bigger

The stadium has been expanded many times over the years. This has allowed more and more fans to watch the games. In 2009, the university decided to make it even bigger. They approved plans to expand the south end zone.

Once this expansion was finished, the stadium could hold about 101,000 people. This made Bryant–Denny Stadium the largest stadium in the Southeastern Conference.
